Management

Italian ryegrass is actually a winter annual that will vernalize (exposure to cold temperatures similar to winter rye or wheat) and then return the next spring, forming a flower and seed prior to completing its growth cycle. If you cut the crop prior to heading out, the crop will continue to produce forage.
*Italian ryegrass will sometimes be “fooled” into vernalization in the fall when there is a cold period in the fall and warm period that follows, but the newer varieties have been developed to not vernalize so quickly.
